I was gifted a lot of beautiful fabric this fall and have been using it to create lap blankets and practice my free-motion quilting techniques. I’ve been reserving the fabric scraps for some fun little projects. This is one of them.
Yesterday, I built about 50 bean bags (some contain rice) that Junco Studio will sell at the Summer Farmers Market. These bean bags will be great fun for both young and old to toss into cans or to play cornhole indoors.
The majority of these were cut out at 4 1/2 ” square but you can you use any size that you prefer. Placing the fabric right sides together, I sewed 3 sides of the square with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Then I turned the bags inside out pushing out the bag corners with a chop stick. I tucked in the fourth side of the bag with a 1/4″ hem and ironed the fabric square flat.

Once the bags were all turned inside out and ironed it was time to top stitch. I top stitched 3 sides and only half of the 4th side leaving part of the seam open. This opening is where I added the beans.
I keep a very full kitchen pantry so from time to time it is necessary to rotate stock. This bowl full of assorted beans were pantry packages that were at least 5 years old (more likely 8 years old). I opted to buy new beans for the pantry and use the old ones in the bean bags.
